Searching for Clients
When you have many clients, finding the right one quickly becomes essential. Nizam’s search functionality lets you locate clients by name, email, or company—helping you access client records without scrolling through long lists.
Accessing Search
The search field typically appears at the top of your client list page. Look for a search box or magnifying glass icon.
You may also have global search functionality that searches across your entire workspace, including clients.
What You Can Search
The client search looks through multiple fields to find matches:
Names:
- First name
- Middle name
- Last name
- Company name (for business clients)
- Display name (the computed full name)
Contact Information:
- Email addresses
Example searches that work:
- “John” - finds all clients with John in first name, last name, or company name
- “Smith” - finds John Smith, Sarah Smith, Smith & Associates
- “Acme” - finds Acme Corporation
- “john@example.com” - finds the client with that email address
How to Search
- Click the search field
- Start typing your search term
- Results filter in real-time as you type
- Click a client from the filtered results to open their page
Minimum characters:
You typically need to enter at least 3 characters before search activates. This prevents overwhelming results from very short queries.
Search Results
As you search:
- The client list filters to show only matching clients
- All visible clients contain your search term somewhere in their record
- Non-matching clients are hidden temporarily
- Clear the search to see all clients again
No separate results page:
Search happens inline—your existing client list filters down to show only matches.
Search Tips for Better Results
✅ Use partial names: You don’t need to type the full name. “Jon” will find “Jonathan” and “Jones.”
✅ Try different fields: If you can’t remember the name, try the company name or email address.
✅ Check spelling: If you get no results, verify your spelling. Search is usually literal.
✅ Use unique terms: If you’re looking for “John Smith” but have many Johns, try “Smith” or “john@email.com” for a more specific search.
✅ Clear between searches: Clear your previous search before starting a new one to see all possible results.
What Search Doesn’t Include
Search typically focuses on primary client fields and does not search:
- Client notes content
- Task descriptions
- Invoice details
- Project names
If you’re looking for “which client wanted blue branding,” you’ll need to manually review client notes or project details.
Search vs. Filter
Search: Find specific clients by name, company, or email
Filter: Narrow clients by categories like client type or pipeline stage
You can often use search and filters together:
- Filter by “Active Client” pipeline stage
- Then search for “Smith”
- Result: Active clients named Smith
No Results Found
If your search returns no results:
Check your spelling:
A small typo can prevent matches.
Try fewer characters:
Instead of “Jonathan,” try “Jon.”
Try a different field:
Search by email or company name instead of personal name.
Consider archived clients:
The client may be archived and hidden from your active list.
Verify the client exists:
If it’s a new client, ensure they’ve been created in the system.
Clearing Search
To return to your full client list:
- Click the X or clear button in the search field
- Delete all text from the search field
- Press Escape (on some systems)
Your full, unfiltered client list reappears.
Global Search vs. Client Search
Client Search (in Client area):
- Only searches clients
- Filters the current client list
- Fast and focused
Global Search (if available):
- Searches across all areas (clients, projects, invoices, etc.)
- Returns mixed results
- Useful when you’re not sure if you’re looking for a client, project, or invoice
Use the client-specific search when you know you’re looking for a client. Use global search when you’re not sure what you’re looking for.
Search Performance
For workspaces with many clients:
- Search is typically fast and runs in real-time
- Results appear as you type
- Large client lists might have slight delays
The search looks for matches starting at the beginning of words first, then anywhere within fields, prioritizing the most relevant results.
Best Practices
✅ Memorize unique identifiers: For clients you access frequently, remember a unique part of their name or email for fast searching.
✅ Use consistent naming: When creating clients, use consistent name formatting to make searching predictable.
✅ Start broad: Begin with a short search term, then add more characters to narrow results if needed.
✅ Combine with filters: After searching, apply filters to narrow further if you got too many results.
Common Questions
Is search case-sensitive?
Usually no. Searching “smith” finds “Smith” and “SMITH.”
Can I search for multiple terms at once?
Search typically treats the entire input as one search term. “John Smith” searches for “John Smith” together, not separately.
Does search include archived clients?
Not by default. Archived clients are usually excluded from search results. You may need to specifically view archived clients to search within them.
Can I save frequent searches?
This depends on your version of Nizam. Check if there’s a “saved searches” or “saved filters” feature.
Why do I see unexpected clients in my results?
Your search term might match a company name or email you didn’t expect. Check the full client details to see where the match occurred.
Can I search within filtered results?
Yes. You can apply filters first (like “Active Client” stage), then search within those filtered results.
Keyboard Shortcuts
Some common shortcuts (may vary by browser):
- Ctrl+F or Cmd+F: May activate search (or browser search)
- Tab: Move focus to search field
- Escape: Clear search and return to full list
Check your workspace for specific keyboard shortcut support.
